Afternoon Tea, Quintessentially British!

www.hotelsavailable.co.uk

Afternoon tea, which was introduced in the early nineteenth century by the seventh Duchess of Bedford, has become increasingly popular in Britain. The Duchess of Bedford would become hungry around four o’clock and would ask for a tray of tea, bread and butter. This became a habit and she began inviting friends to join her, making this a social event.

Your typical afternoon tea consists of sandwiches, cakes, pastries and scones, a mini meal designed to fill the gap in anticipation before your evening meal.  It is a fantastic way to celebrate with family and friends, perfect for those special occasions that include Mother’s Day, a baby shower, christening, hen party, retirement or even a catch up with your loved ones.

Today, the afternoon tea comes with different options such as a glass of bubbles, coffee, wine or gin. The question on our minds is… do you prefer jam before clotted cream or vice versa? The Devon tradition is cream first with the jam on top and the Cornish tradition is to put the jam on and top it off with clotted cream. Although both the Cornish and Devonshire people lay claim to this invention, at the end of the day it remains to this day, a matter of preference.

The afternoon tea has also become a fantastic gift idea. The hotels on our website offer various gift vouchers to choose from in different locations. Soak up picturesque outdoor views or enjoy luxurious interiors, the choice is yours. Enjoy an afternoon tea with your loved ones and use Hotels Available for inspiration.
